Janney Art update

2nd grade:

2nd graders are studying the art of Japanese fish printmaking, called Gyotaku. Japanese fisherman have used ink and paper as a way to remember their catch. Students drew their own real or imaginary fish on foam, and created a background. They will print their fish on top of their background and show the fish moving through the composition.

3rd grade:

3rd graders did a close study of illustrator James Gulliver Hancock, who draws buildings of New York City through close observation. Students drew a building on foam by adding details and texture. They printed their buildings onto bright paper and will create a collage of their prints to make a city scape.

4th grade:

4th graders have been studying symmetry in math class. We discussed all the ways symmetry can be found in our natural world and in many designs. 4th graders learned about mandalas, balanced designs that use radial symmetry. They created a theme for their mandala and used symbols to represent that theme.

5th grade:

5th graders completed a printmaking unit inspired by Andy Warhol. They learned a "reduction printing" method that allowed them to layer multiple colors on one print. They ended their art for the year on a pinch pot project.
