Art as Advocacy
How does our art convey messages? How can artists use art to advocate for things they believe in?
5th graders completed an art Cornerstone unit that required them to think deeply about the things they believe in.
To start, students completed a "Close Study" of Ernest Wither's photograph from the 1968 sanitation strike in Memphis.
Next, they looked at artists such as Bansky and Jenny Holzer who use their art as a means to subtly or loudly draw attention to an issue. Students picked an issue that affects our school, community, or world and created an artistic piece that draws attention to it. They used symbols and slogans.
