2nd Grade Macro photography

"How does a subject change when you view it close-up?"
"How can you use art and photography to see nature in a new way?"
"What is macro photography?"

These are the questions that second graders explored in a unit on Macro photography. Second graders studied painter Georgia O'Keefe's abstract interpretations of flowers and the natural world. Second graders noticed that
by painting her subjects up-close, Georgia O'Keefe helps the viewer focus more on the colors, lines, and texture of the art.

Second graders made the connection between Georgia O'Keefe's paintings and Macro photography. Macro photography uses a magnified lens to capture small details. Second graders went into the garden and used the Macro mode on their cameras to practice seeing the world through a Georgia O'Keefe lens. To give a more finished look to their images, students experimented with basic photo color editing using the program Picasa.
