Hanoch Piven self-portraits
First Graders studied an artist named Hanoch Piven who arranges everyday objects into portraits. We discussed how Piven uses objects that help describe the person in the portrait, such as using a pencil for the mouth to say that the person likes to write. We read Piven's book "My Best Friend is as Sharp as a Pencil" and studied Piven's portraits.
First graders created their own self-portraits in the style of Piven using the app Faces iMake. The objective was to create a portrait by picking objects that would describe their interests and who they are. Students practiced changing the shape of the objects and layering objects on top of one another to create a digital collage.
Next, first graders described their portraits by using similies, the same way Piven writes in his books.
I am as beautiful as a queen, as sweet as a banana, and as playful as a doll.
I am as fast as lightning, as smart as a calculator, and as smooth as a rolling pin.
I am as sweet as a pear, as pretty as an artichoke, and as easy as a letter.
