What are the differences between these two images? Are they both self-portraits? What is the difference between a self-portrait and a selfie? Can a selfie be considered art, just like a self-portrait can be?

5th graders tackled these questions as they entered a unit about self-expression through visual imagery. We discussed "selfies" and the positive and negative implications of this rising medium.

The goal of this project was to show self-identity through an image. Students took a selfie image that showed their unique personalities. Next they gathered Creative Commons images that represented themselves as individuals and used the layer and opacity tools in Inkpad to assemble them into a cohesive image.
