Keith Haring

Second graders are studying the work of Keith Haring, a pop artist who made some amazing contributions to the art community during his short life. Haring is known for his colorful symbols of people, dogs, and babies.

Second grade artists were most fascinated by Haring's drawings he made on empty blackboards in the NYC subway. Haring created his drawings in the middle of the day and was even arrested on occasion. This prompted a great conversation: is graffiti considered art? Is breaking the law justified if your intent is to share your art with the world?

After studying Haring's use of complementary color, line, and movement, second graders created their own Haring action figures using the Wooden Doll app and Sketchbook. We even danced to some 80's music while acting out our poses.
